| >> History of Sheep Production in Saskatchewan
The Saskatchewan Sheep Development
Board (SSDB) with its office
in Saskatoon, has the provincial mandate for industry development and
is considered the voice of the industry. With five board
members elected from five regions across the province, the SSDB
administers an industry checkoff with funds supporting market development
and promotion which includes extension and producer seminars. The board
operates under the regulatory structure of the Saskatchewan Agri-Food
Council. Orders and annual reports from the council can be located at
the
Agri-Food Council website. Other activity includes liaison with
government departments, prioritizing research needs, a leafy spurge grazing
project, and other public relation activities.
The Sheep Board offers twice monthly sheep and goat marketing,
free consultation/referral services and sells livestock supplies.

To provide for the effective development of the Saskatchewan sheep industry
and the promotion, regulation and marketing of sheep and sheep products.
Specific aims are:
-
To coordinate and inform the industry
on matters relating to the production and marketing of sheep and sheep
products.
-
To promote harmony and communication
within the industry.
To develop the potential of the industry through extension, development
of the market and the promotion of sheep products.
- To ensure the provision of services required for the
profitable marketing of sheep products.
Vision Statement
A sheep industry that is competitive and viable within sustainable agriculture,
growing and responding to the global marketplace, and offering alternative
opportunities for production, processing, and access to diverse markets
with producer and consumer support.
Industry Statistics
- 1,000 flocks registered with the SSDB as well there
are some unregistered flocks
- We estimate a provincial flock of 60,000 breeding ewes
- Average flock size if you include all flocks --- 60
ewes
- Average flock size excluding flocks under 20 ewes ---
77 ewes
Industry Issues
- Adequate funding for our industry to carry out the
work that is expected of us.
- Developing the value-added component of our industry.
With no federal slaughter plant in the province that will slaughter
lambs, many of our lambs leave the province to be slaughtered.
- Long term predation control, we need a program that
all producers can count on for help for years to come.
- Check-off the system as it is now is not providing
the funding needed for the SSDB to do the work that is needed by the
industry.
